Gaspipe Theatre Company was founded in 2000 by Derek W. Wcott and Danielle R. Murphy with the mission of developing the arts in central Pennsylvania and the town of Lewisburg. Gaspipe initially began with productions of Shakespeare in the Park and dramatic readings (particularly for African-American History Months as well as other socially conscious events). The company has since expanded to the presentation of original works written by aspiring playwrights (both amateur and professional), presentations at education and cultural events, and productions of plays and dramatic interpretations of works by authors of greater renown.
In addition to the co-founders, the original company included Andrew Shaffer, Amir Navarro, Tanya Russell, Donald Mapes, Jack Knelly, Jade Scholl, and Pete Zerbe, some of who still act for Gaspipe today.
The company also set out to create a welcoming environment for those interested in performing arts but with little or no acting experience. In the words of co-founder Scott, "It has always been my belief that in us all lies dormant a singer, dancer, actor or musician, an artist or writer, constantly wrestling (consciously or not) to shed our cocoons to be what is truly in our nature."
